This article asks why the epic film Gladiator (USA 2000) was so successful in the cinemas, although the genre of the .ancient. film was considered dead since the mid sixties. However, only at first glance can Gladiator be taken as an .ancient. film in the stricter sense of the word. Looking at its costs and expenses, the technical efforts and its plot, this film contains all elements of a modern blockbuster, transposed in an ancient setting. With great success this film goes with the taste of the contemporary visitors of cinema. Thus, it cannot be taken as a modern example of the .ancient. film and it did not yet set the standards which will define the modern .ancient. film of the early 21th century..
In 1964 the film The Fall of the Roman Empire was released, on the same subject as . later . Gladiator. Amid the great .ancient. epics of the fifties and sixties this film was an exception, because it did not contain the main elements constituting the genre. However, The Fall of the Roman Empire became a flop, mainly because this film did not go with the taste of the contemporary cinemagoers. Instead of this, it dealt with problems which were under discussion in the USA in these years.
