Ein menschlicher Held? Che Guevara in Steven Soderberghs Biopic von 2008
Mit seinem zweiteiligen Spielfilm Che. Revolución und Che. Guerilla wollte Filmemacher Steven Soderbergh erklärtermaßen der Mythisierung von Ernesto „Che“ Guevaras etwas entgegensetzen und dem Publikum eine Annäherung an den Menschen hinter der Bildikone ermöglichen. Die Filmkritik untersucht, inwieweit der Film den selbstgesetzten Anspruch erfüllt. In der Tat wird das Leben der Guerilleros als mühsam und voller alltäglicher Routinen präsentiert, der Guerillakampf also entheroisiert. Zugleich beschränkt sich das Biopic jedoch weitgehend auf Guevaras Jahre als Guerillero und bedient sich – quellennah, aber unkritisch – dessen ausgeprägter Selbststilisierung. Zudem inszeniert der Film das Schicksal seines Helden als tragisch und reproduziert so letztlich den Mythos Che Guevara eher statt zu einem neuen Blick auf diese schillernde, widersprüchliche Persönlichkeit einzuladen.
A human hero? Che Guevara in Steven Soderbergh‘s Biopic of 2008
In his two-part movie (Che Part 1: The Argentine and Che Part 2: Guerrilla), the filmmaker Steven Soderbergh sought to portray Ernesto “Che” Guevara as a real person and thereby offer a new view of the historical figure that pop culture has turned into a contentless icon. The paper explores the extent to which the movie fulfills its self-appointed task. On the one hand, Lena Karber finds that Che presents the life of a guerilla as tedious (both for themselves and the audience) and thus does not heroize guerilla warfare. On the other hand, in focusing almost exclusively on Guevara the guerilla, the biopic uncritically takes on much of his pronounced self-staging. In addition, the movie tells the story of a tragic hero and, so, ends up reproducing the myth of Che Guevara more than exploring the thoughts and actions of this complex and contradictory personality.
