Mark Niebuhr and German Guilt, 1945, in the DEFA-Movie The Detention, 1983
The film review analyzes the structure and cinematic configuration of the East-German movie The Detention by Frank Beyer from 1983 and suggests reading this laconic movie about the detention of the German POW Mark Niebuhr in 1945 simultaneously as in accord with the “anti-fascist” line of the DEFA-Studio and as a reflection of Socialism’s existential crises in its last decade.
Kurz-Bio: Angelika Nguyen
studierte Filmdramaturgie, Literaturtheorie, Filmgeschichte und Filmtheorie an der HFF Konrad Wolf in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Ihre Diplomarbeit beschäftigte sich mit autobiographischer Kindheit in den Filmen von François Truffaut, István Szabo und Jewgenij Jewtuschenko. Von 1986 bis 1989 war sie Dramaturgieassistentin im DEFA-Spielfilmstudio. Sie ist Regisseurin des Dokumentarfilms Bruderland ist abgebrannt über vietnamesische Immigrant_innen und freiberuflich als Autorin, Referentin und Filmkritikerin tätig.
